A Must-Have Wish List, Coach's Edition

Even when you have it all laid out in preparation, the never-ending demands of a coach at any level can be tough to manage.  Make life a bit easier with some of these great finds we've composed from canvasing our coaches!

We took the time to survey GD's coaching staff after the Holidays, for some of their "must-have" items  when signing up to take on a role on the other side of the chalk lines. Here's part one of our Top 10 Must Have Wish List Items  that every coach find a  benefit from having with them for the team! 

The coaches at Game Day Athletics are confident you won't be disappointed, so without further adieu, let's jump to the list: 

1.  Carabiner Clips

The possibilities are endless for a coach with a carabiner clip. From fixing your Bownets  on-site and hanging your clipboards, to creating more space in a cramped-dugout, carving out an adhoc-band station at a tournament for pre-game warm-ups, a carabiner clip on hand is one of Coach Jillian's recommended grabs! 

Carabiner Clips can be sold individually or in packs, so we recommend picking up a small pack of 6 to throw into your coaching bag. 

2.  Clipboard with Storage 

We participate in a sport hosted amongst the great-outdoors, which means mother-nature gets to play its hand in our game, as well.  A clipboard with storage can be a coach's saving grace when the storm-clouds start to roll in! Keep your lineup cards, smart-device used for Game Changer and money for the umpires safe and dry in your clipboards' storage compartment. 

 Pre- and post-game notes can be drafted between innings on the clipboards' smooth writing surface and tucked away for reference after.  

Coaching the youth? Protect your important check-in documents from gatorade spills,  seeds and dirt in the dugout! 

3.  Utility Sports Wagon

Part of the excitement of competition is seeing new places, meeting new people and getting a chance to see some incredible venues! Despite how much we love checking out a new ballpark, the pitfall is not knowing what to expect while there!

Will it be a quick switch from field to field at the complex? Are the warm-up areas vastly far in the park from where we play? Are we on pretty flat ground, or surrounded by hills? 

With a utility sports wagon, regardless of the venue's set-up, you'll be able to easily pile up your team's equipment to haul around from spot to spot with little effort! No more having to strap up bags of nets, tees and buckets onto your shoulders or wrapped in your arms while juggling your own gear. 

Some utility sport wagon models offer thicker wheels for easier carting over sandy areas. Most sports wagons are collapsible and easy to store in your sedans' trunk or back seat. Injured athlete? Worst comes to worse, you have a wagon to keep her off that ankle. Team parents can even use the wagon to cart that heavy team cooler stacked with ice, drinks and Frogg Togg Towels  you can't do without this season. 

4. G-Shock Watch

A serious coach doesn't want to be distracted by the notifications, emails and pings of a cellphone during the game, but keeping time is essential. Put down the phones & smart devices, and disconnect with the piece-of-mind a G Shock digital watch can provide.

5. Cargo Pants 

That's right --- they're not just for construction workers.  And now, with everyday fashion trending as athleisure, cargo pants just got a whole lot sportier!

Think of all the small items you carry with you on the field: the lineup, a pen or pencil, the Evo Shield your batter-runner turns over to you at first base or the Pocket Radar you keep on hand to scout. 

Cargo pants are notoriously known for their utility and pockets, and are now available in lightweight, flexible fabrics, perfect for wearing regardless of the season.  We have always been anti-khaki shorts, ourselves, and now there is a more breathable alternative to the classic coach-look.

Check out our interview below!  What made you want to become a college baseball coach ?  When my playing days finally came to an end, I wasn't quite ready to step away from the game. My senior year, I lost my mom and I was given an opportunity to stick around at my alma mater and volunteer as an assistant coach. It changed my life, and was exactly what I needed at the time. I found a real passion for being in a mentorship position and guiding younger athletes. I fell in love with the game from yet another side, and it's been an incredible ride.  What was the biggest obstacle you faced in chasing this dream ?  The biggest obstacle I faced was after my first 3 years coaching for Rutgers University, when I had to take some time away. In honesty, while I loved the position, it wasn't paying enough, in fact it wasn't paying at all as I was fulfilling a volunteer position.
